John had the honour of being the second private in the Corps in the Regular Army in 1960. Previously he was in the Corps from August 1958 to 1960 in the National Service/CMF as a private then a corporal. When John left the Regular Army in 1969 due to a back injury received in an ambush in Vietnam, he was encouraged to rejoin the Army Reserve in 1972 till 1974 but had to leave due to effects of the back injury received in Vietnam. We believe John is one of a very few who have served in NS, CMF, Reg Army and Reserve. Other than the NS Training Bn and the Reg Army Training Bn at Kapooka, all of John's service has been in the Intelligence Corps.
John joined the CMF to originally planning to join the Band Corps, but after infantry training was allocated to Army intelligence at Moore Park. After 3 years of service, John discharged. Upon receiving the Army Defence Medal and marching in the ANZAC Day March, he joined the AICA Executive Committee. John also served as Vice President of Riverwood Legion sub-branch until its demise.
